Isaiah's Vision of the Lord

In the year that (A)King Uzziah died I (B)saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train[a] of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had (C)six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said:

(D)“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
(E)the whole earth is full of his glory!”[b]

And (F)the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and (G)the house was filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! (H)For I am lost; (I)for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the (J)King, the Lord of hosts!”

Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he (K)touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

Isaiah's Commission from the Lord

And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for (L)us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.” And he said, “Go, and say to this people:

(M)“‘Keep on hearing,[c] but do not understand;
keep on seeing,[d] but do not perceive.’
10 (N)Make the heart of this people (O)dull,[e]
    and their ears heavy,
    and blind their eyes;
(P)lest they see with their eyes,
    and hear with their ears,
and understand with their hearts,
    and turn and be healed.”
11 Then I said, (Q)“How long, O Lord?”
And he said:
“Until (R)cities lie waste
    without inhabitant,
and houses without people,
    and the land is a desolate waste,
12 and the Lord removes people far away,
    and the forsaken places are many in the midst of the land.
13 (S)And though a tenth remain in it,
    it will be burned[f] again,
like a terebinth or an oak,
    whose stump (T)remains
    when it is felled.”
(U)The holy seed[g] is its stump.

Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Spirit

21 (A)And they went into Capernaum, and immediately (B)on the Sabbath (C)he entered the synagogue and was teaching. 22 And (D)they were astonished at his teaching, (E)for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. 23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 (F)“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? (G)I know who you are—(H)the Holy One of God.” 25 But Jesus (I)rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit, (J)convulsing him and (K)crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 And they were all (L)amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? (M)A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” 28 And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.

Jesus Heals Many

29 (N)And immediately he[a] (O)left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 Now (P)Simon's mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. 31 And he came and (Q)took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.

32 That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or (R)oppressed by demons. 33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door. 34 (S)And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And (T)he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.

Jesus Preaches in Galilee

35 (U)And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and (V)there he prayed. 36 And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, 37 and they found him and said to him, (W)“Everyone is looking for you.” 38 And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for (X)that is why I came out.” 39 (Y)And (Z)he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.

Jesus Cleanses a Leper

40 (AA)And a leper[b] came to him, imploring him, and (AB)kneeling said to him, (AC)“If you will, you can make me clean.” 41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.” 42 And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. 43 And (AD)Jesus[c] sternly charged him and sent him away at once, 44 and said to him, (AE)“See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, (AF)show yourself to the priest and (AG)offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, (AH)for a proof to them.” 45 (AI)But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter (AJ)a town, but was out in (AK)desolate places, and (AL)people were coming to him from every quarter.

16 Bind up (A)the testimony; (B)seal the teaching[a] among my disciples. 17 I will (C)wait for the Lord, who is (D)hiding his face from the house of Jacob, and I will hope in him. 18 (E)Behold, I and (F)the children whom the Lord has given me are signs and portents in Israel from the Lord of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion. 19 And when they say to you, “Inquire of the (G)mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,” should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of (H)the dead on behalf of the living? 20 (I)To the teaching and to the testimony! If they will not speak according to this word, it is because they have no (J)dawn. 21 They will pass through the land,[b] greatly distressed and hungry. And when they are hungry, they will be enraged and will speak contemptuously against[c] their king and their God, and turn their faces upward. 22 (K)And they will look to the earth, but behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish. And they will be thrust into (L)thick darkness.

For to Us a Child Is Born

[d] But there will be no (M)gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he (N)brought into contempt the land of (O)Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he (P)has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.[e]

[f] (Q)The people (R)who walked in darkness
    have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of (S)deep darkness,
    on them has light shone.
(T)You have multiplied the nation;
    you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you
    as with (U)joy at the harvest,
    as they (V)are glad (W)when they divide the spoil.
(X)For the yoke of his burden,
    (Y)and the staff for his shoulder,
    the rod of his oppressor,
    you have broken as (Z)on the day of Midian.
(AA)For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult
    and every garment rolled in blood
    will be burned as fuel for the fire.
(AB)For to us a child is born,
    to us (AC)a son is given;
(AD)and the government shall be (AE)upon[g] his shoulder,
    and his name shall be called[h]
Wonderful (AF)Counselor, (AG)Mighty God,
    (AH)Everlasting (AI)Father, Prince of (AJ)Peace.
Of the increase of his government and of peace
    (AK)there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
    to establish it and to uphold it
(AL)with justice and with righteousness
    from this time forth and forevermore.
(AM)The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

The 144,000 of Israel Sealed

After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back (A)the four winds of the earth, (B)that no wind might blow on earth or sea or against any tree. Then I saw another angel ascending (C)from the rising of the sun, with (D)the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm earth and sea, saying, (E)“Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the servants of our God (F)on their foreheads.” And (G)I heard the number of the sealed, 144,000, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel:

12,000 from the tribe of Judah were sealed,
12,000 from the tribe of Reuben,
12,000 from the tribe of Gad,
12,000 from the tribe of Asher,
12,000 from the tribe of Naphtali,
12,000 from the tribe of Manasseh,
12,000 from the tribe of Simeon,
12,000 from the tribe of Levi,
12,000 from the tribe of Issachar,
12,000 from the tribe of Zebulun,
12,000 from the tribe of Joseph,
12,000 from the tribe of Benjamin were sealed.

A Great Multitude from Every Nation

After this I looked, and behold, (H)a great multitude that no one could number, (I)from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, (J)clothed in white robes, with (K)palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, (L)“Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11 And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and (M)the four living creatures, and they (N)fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 (O)saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

13 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, (P)clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?” 14 I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of (Q)the great tribulation. (R)They have washed their robes and (S)made them white (T)in the blood of the Lamb.

15 “Therefore they are before the throne of God,
    and (U)serve him day and night in his temple;
    and he who sits on the throne (V)will shelter them with his presence.
16 (W)They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore;
    (X)the sun shall not strike them,
    nor any scorching heat.
17 For the Lamb in the midst of the throne (Y)will be their shepherd,
    and he will guide them to springs of (Z)living water,
and (AA)God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”
